Keratin treatments, also known as smoothing services, work by infusing polymers into the hair with the help of heat from tools like a flat iron. These polymers coat the hair, giving it a smoother, shinier, and healthier appearance. However, it’s important to understand that this is largely a cosmetic fix, and the effects are temporary.

In the past, formaldehyde was commonly used in these treatments to straighten the hair and prolong the results. However, due to health concerns, modern keratin treatments now use safer alternatives like aldehydes, acetic acid (vinegar), glycol from fruit acids, amino acids, and cysteine. These ingredients provide smoothing effects while reducing the harmful side effects of older formulas.

The final result of a keratin treatment depends on several factors, including hair type, processing time, iron temperature, and the number of iron passes. It’s highly recommended to perform a strand test before the full treatment to assess whether the hair’s color will fade or lift, and to determine the best protocol for your hair.

Today’s keratin treatments have been improved with the addition of botanicals, vitamins, and natural extracts, making them more nourishing. Some treatments, like cysteine-glycol keratin, allow for same-day washing, but for best results, it’s advised to wait at least 24 hours before washing your hair. If left longer than recommended, the hair may develop a slight sulfur smell when wet. Treatments like Keragreen Keratin, however, require a 3-day waiting period with no washing, clips, ponytails, or sweating.

As a conventional stylist, I believe these modern keratin treatments are excellent for reducing frizz and improving manageability. However, as a holistic stylist, it’s important to acknowledge that while these treatments have improved, they are not entirely chemical-free and should be used with care depending on individual needs.
