In plain English, keratin treatments are polymers or plastics that get infused into the hair by a heat source (a hair iron). They coat the hair making it look smooth, shiny and healthier.

However, this is only a superficial cosmetic fix. Manufacturers use different types of preservatives and straighten agents to get that final result. Previously, formaldehyde was used to make the hair straight and flat, as well maintaining a longer shelf life. Currently aldehydes like acetic acid (vinegar), glycol (from fruits acids), amino acids, and cysteine are also used.

The final result will vary depend of the type of hair, time of processing, iron temperature, iron passes. strand test is require to evaluate and decide what will be the protocol to follow, and if color will fade or lift.

Today’s keratins has been enriched with more botanicals, vitamins, extracts, amino acids, the cysteine – glycol keratins the hair is clean the same day. You should wait 24 hours to wash again, if you wait longer be sure the hair is tight or mark. If you do not wash after the second day, some clients may have a strong sulfur smell when hair is wet.

Keragreen keratine should not be washed for 3 days -no clips, pony tails, no sweat-, please.

In my opinion as a conventional stylist this is one of the best and latest products in the cosmetology industry that works for consumer purposes-no frizzy hair, but as a holistic stylist:

Also, what I’ve heard is that many of the Anti-freeze (shampoo, conditioners, oils, serums, gels, mousse, leave-in, name it) has the same polymers, so when it is heated at 450 degrees, they release Formaldehyde when pressing with the iron; that it called PPM or part per million on the air. Is that bad? Maybe… as when you consume a dark cola drink or any other food and your liver metabolizes it into formaldehydes, or when someone is sensitive to wheat or chamomile.

Make a priority, cosmetic beauty or health. I believe products will become better, but chemistry is chemistry…

Sadly, nothing is completely toxic free. The more I investigate, the more confuse it gets. By the end, put it in a balance and then decide what is best for you.
