What are in your personal cosmetics products?

What are you feeding your skin?
Human Carcinogens

• Paraben (Propyl, Methyl or Butyl):

Cheap preservatives are used to inhibit microbial growth in skincare products, body products, baby products, hair care products, and many other beauty care products.

Hazard: Exposure to these harmful toxins has caused many allergic reactions, skin reactions and health problems.

• Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS):

Harsh detergent used because it’s cheap and sudses well.

It is used as an engine degreaser and garage floor cleaner but you will also find it in shampoo, soap, facial cleanser, body wash, baby shampoo, baby wash, and body scrub and even in products dubbed as “Natural Skin Care Products” or “Organic Skin Care Products”.

Hazards: SLS has a degenerative effect on the cell membranes and denatures protein such as in hair or skin. This can damage skin or hair, leading to aged skin and poor hair.

SLS has the potential to cause cataracts (through skin absorption, even without direct eye contact). SLS can denature the protein of the eyes and delay the healing time of the eyes.

From skin contact, SLS can be absorbed into your circulation and concentrate in you organs, such as your heart, liver or brain. This is potentially dangerous since SLS is a mutagen, capable of changing the information in the genetic material of your cell and organs.

• Formaldehyde:

A toxic chemical used as a preservative in cosmetics (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, liquid hand wash, bubble bath, children’s bubble bath, baby shampoo, etc.), vaccines and for embalming bodies. Formaldehyde solutions can destroy your skin’s natural protective oils.

Hazards: SUSPECT CANCER HAZARD. MAY CAUSE CANCER. Risk of cancer depends on level and duration of exposure.

Harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Causes irritation to skin, (dryness, flaking, cracking, redness, itching, hives, blisters and dermatitis), eyes and respiratory tract. May be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed. It cannot be made nonpoisonous.

• Propylene Glycol:

This cheap, synthetic petro-chemical is used as an emulsifying base in beauty care products such as body creams, body lotions, baby products and even in skin lotion dubbed as “Organic skin Care” or “Natural Skin Care” to make the skin look smooth. But ultimately, it ages the skin faster.

Hazard: It can be absorbed through your skin and potentially cause allergic reactions, and liver and kidney damage. It can also denature the skin’s protein, leading to poor, sagging skin.

• Mineral Oil:

This cheap, petroleum-based oil clogs the skin’s pores and enlarges them, leading to poor, sagging skin. It decreases the ability of the skin cells to exchange nutrients and waste product.

Hazard: Those allergic to petroleum products may develop a skin irritation reaction (redness, itching, hives, and blisters).

• Synthetic Colors:

Believed to be Cancer-Causing Agents, synthetic colors are used to supposedly make a cosmetic “pretty”. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6.

Hazard: Believed to be Cancer-Causing Agents. Skin contact can also cause an allergic reaction (redness, itching, hives, and blisters).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a well studied SIDE EFFECT OF ARTIFICIAL COLOURS. Symptoms: Lack of concentration, distractibility, excitability, impulsiveness, temper tantrum, anxiety, antisocial behavior, difficulties with coordination, disabilities of both cognitive and learning functions. J. Human Nutr, 34:167-174, 1980 Report on Color Additives. FACT, June, 1987 Pediatrics. 1978 Jun; 61(6):811-7.

• Deazolidinyl Urea:

These are the most commonly used preservatives after parabens. They are well established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis by the American Academy of Dermatology. This Formaldehyde-Releasing preservative is used in many skin care products, toiletries, lotions and is often found in preparations labeled as ‘hypoallergenic’.

Hazard: If you have sensitivity to this chemical, it will cause dermatitis. This Formaldehyde-Releasing preservative is also known by the following names: Quaternium-15, 2-bromo-nitropropane-1, 3-diol, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Germall II and Germall 115. (Germall 115 releases formaldehyde at just over 10°).

• Phenoxyethanol:

A preservative added to cosmetics, ointments, eardrops and vaccines. It is commonly used in toiletries and wipes, even in some products that claim to be natural.

Hazard: The manufacturers of this chemical describe the toxicology of phenoxyethanol as: “Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. May cause reproductive defects. Severe eye and skin irritant.”

• Triethanolamine (TEA) Diethanolamine (DEA) Monoethanolamine (MEA):

They are commonly found in bubble baths, shampoos, soaps and facial cleansers. They are easily absorbed by the skin and there is also evidence that carcinogens form when Cocamide DEA (a cleanser, thickener and foam booster) is applied to the skin.

Hazards: These three chemicals are hormone-disrupting and form cancer-causing agents. Research indicates a strong link to liver and kidney cancer.
